Classical and modern guitarist Gunter Herbig was born in Brazil, grew up in Portugal and Germany, and moved to New Zealand in 1989. A teacher, he was Head of Classical Guitar and Chamber Music at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington and was on the staff at the School of Music at Auckland University for 25 years. He also performs nationally and international and has recorded numerous albums, including his take on the works of Douglas Lilburn and David Farquhar. His latest album is Ex Oriente, an electric guitar interpretation of mystic G.I. Gurdjieff's piano music. Katherine Mansfield was one of many disciples of G.I Gurdjieff in the later stages of her life, and she died at his Institute for Harmonious Development of Man in Fontainebleau outside Paris.
