As a parent, I've always been concerned about the mental health of my children. But it wasn't until my recent conversation with the incredible Michael Dow, an author and a registered nurse at an inpatient psychiatric facility, that I realized the depth of this issue. Michael, an Air Force veteran whose life journey is as enlightening as his books, uses his NERS Florence and NERS Dorothea series to simplify medical and mental health education for young children. Our conversation ranged from his early anger-driven decision to join the military after 9-11, his transformation into the field of nursing, to his current mission of making medical education accessible for kids.

In the latter half of this discussion, we deepened the conversation around Michael's upcoming project - the Nurse Dorothea series, an initiative focusing on mental health and well-being for children. We explored the urgency for such resources in today’s society, where kids are exposed to various stressors, including the fear of gun violence at school. Moreover, we examined the broad spectrum of topics the series would touch upon, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Michael's journey is not just inspiring, but his determination to equip kids with the tools they need to understand and cope with mental health issues is truly moving. Tune in if you, like me, are on the quest of providing your kids with the right set of mental health tools.
