The New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 5-1 on Tuesday in the Bronx thanks to a gutty and sweaty performance by Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton’s 400th home run. The game was tied in the sixth when Stanton stepped up with a runner on and hit a 451-foot bomb to left-center. The milestone comes five years and five days after he hit his 300th home run in his first season with the Yankees. DJ LeMahieu also hit a home run, Jasson Dominguez had his first Yankee Stadium hit, a double, and Gleyber Torres gave the Yankees some insurance with a two-run double. As for Stanton and his Yankee legacy, we discuss his past couple of seasons and wonder if he can turn things around and finish his career on a stronger note than in 2022 and 2023. Then, we discuss the news about Anthony Rizzo being shut down for the season, which isn’t surprising but also sad because of how his season started. We talk about how 2023 turned out for Rizzo and the optimistic and pessimistic outlooks for him and his recovery. Then we preview game two of the series in Detroit and give Wednesday’s starter, Clarke Schmidt, his flowers for his unexpected 2023 season.
