Submit ReviewThis week on Comes A Time, comedian Gary Gulman joins Oteil and Mike to talk about why we’re supposed to be exactly where we are at all times, “doing the work” to improve your mental health and how it’s impossible to stop positive progress once you’ve started, and the importance of simultaneously knowing that you suck and that you’re a badass. They also discuss Gary’s new HBO Max comedy special, the relationship between suffering and art, and Gary’s memoir that he’s working on. Gary offers experiential insights on navigating artistic development and mental health challenges, and provides helpful tips that everyone can benefit from.
Gary Gulman has established himself as an eminent performer and a peerless writer during his 25-year career. A Boston native, Gary has been a scholarship college football player, an accountant, and a high school teacher. Today he is one of the most popular touring comics, selling out theaters around the country. He is currently on his Born On 3rd Base Tour, and in November he performed to a sold out crowd at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City for the NY Comedy Festival. Gary has made four masterful TV specials including his most recent universally acclaimed stand-up special for HBO, The Great Depresh, a tour de force look at mental illness which is equal parts hilarious and inspiring. In 2019 he appeared in the international blockbuster Joker, and he will co-star with Amy Schumer in the upcoming Hulu comedy series, Life & Beth. Gary is currently writing a memoir for Flatiron Books, tentatively titled K Through 12, which he discusses in this episode.
