And in this short football language podcast, I am going to explain the phrase ‘second debut‘. The word debut means to do something for the first time; so in football it is used when a player plays their first game for a new club and can be used as a noun or a verb: To debut for the club or to make their debut for the club. Sometimes a player returns to a club that they had previously played with and so we can use the phrase ‘second debut‘ when that player makes another new start with this club. Recently, two big stars have returned to their previous clubs: Theo Walcott returned to Southampton after 14 years away at Arsenal and Everon and made his second debut against Chelsea, while Welsh player Gareth Bale returned to Tottenham after seven years at Real Madrid and he made his second debut against West Ham.
