With the long-awaited remaster of Final Fantasy VIII finally upon us, now is a good time to take stock of this divisive game’s place in the RPG pantheon. Its convoluted plot involving a time-traveling sorceress and a magical orphanage may have tripped over itself in the final act, but that doesn’t negate its monumental contributions to the genre. Final Fantasy VIII gave us some incredible music, an underrated frenemy in Seifer, and one of the best love stories in games.
