The government is within 'striking distance' to a second budget surplus, now forecasting just a wafer thin deficit off the back of increased tax revenue and a multi-billion dollar delay in some infrastructure spending.

While its good news for the budget bottom line, the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook released on Wednesday doesn't include any more cost of living support, and shows real wage growth is lower than previously expected.
