Day 550.

The history of Ukraine and Russia is a subject that has come up again and again on this podcast. Good history and ‘bad’ history underpin how all of us understand the origins, reasons and justifications for the ongoing full-scale invasion. One guiding light is Ukrainian historian Serhii Plokhy: professor of Ukrainian history and Director at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University.

His books, from ‘The Gates of Europe’ to the recently released 'Russo-Ukrainian War' are essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Ukraine and its history.

David Knowles spoke to Professor Plokhy recently about Ukrainian and Russian history, parallels with the Second World War and revelations in his new book.
