SHOW NOTES:
LAYOFFS ARE NEVER FUN, AND THEY HAVE RIPPLE EFFECTS
- Hiring tends to happen in waves, and layoffs happen in blasts
- Sometimes layoffs happen for solid reasons, and sometimes for emotional reasons
HOW TO NAVIGATE A LAYOFF, OR BEING AROUND AFTER A LAYOFF
- Eventually, everybody gets fired - whether they should or not
- Try not to make it too emotional, which is initially difficult
- Companies never really take ownership, but they can be compassionate
- Allow yourself to go through the grieving process
- Decide if you still want to stay in the tech industry
- Stay active in life - get up, find a routine, stay healthy, make a plan each day
- Begin looking while you have financial buffers
- Find something creative - build things
- Stay active with your skills - volunteer, side projects, etc.
- Stay active with your networks
- At some point, be realistic - family needs, sunk costs, titles, etc.
