Submit ReviewBooks are like spells and being a writer is like being a business owner. This week, we hear from Amanda Lovelace, the incredibly prolific poet, tarot reader, and creator of a soon-to-be released oracle deck. Amanda is the author of several books of poetry, including The Princess Saves Herself in This One, The Witch Doesn’t Burn in This One, and To Drink Coffee With a Ghost.
In this episode, Amanda takes us on her journey from sharing her poetry on Tumblr to becoming a published author, and shares the logistics, structure, and self-care behind making creative work her business. She discusses how poetry has helped her work with her traumatic experiences of assault and abuse to reclaim herself and empower her readers. Amanda then invites us into her personal history with tarot, and weaves beautiful narratives about the capacity that the practice of magic has both to empower culturally silenced people to take control in their lives and to hold us accountable to the power we gain.
If you love magic, poetry, and honest talk about what it’s like to have all your dreams come true and still not feel like you know exactly what you’re doing, make sure to listen to this episode!
