What do you do when you’re 9 years old and you can’t find any books featuring kids who look like you? You open your own bookstore, of course! Today we’re joined by Rylei Brissett, a 3rd grader from Florida who did exactly that when she and her mom Brea founded The Brown Bookcase in 2019.

Brea and Rylei have lots to say about books for and about brown and Black children, as well as their top recommendations for kids of all races and ages, like the Jada Jones series and the Nikki and Deja collection. Plus, what it’s like to be 9 and a CEO. (Spoiler: It’s very cool.)

**IMPORTANT: Brea and Rylei run this bookstore out of their house and as you can imagine, they’ve had a very busy few weeks! If the books you want to buy are out of stock, email Brea at CONTACT@THEBROWNBOOKCASE.COM and she will send you a notification email 24 hours ahead of restock so you can grab it! They get shipments of books delivered weekly!**
