Rich and Andrew sit down and deconstruct the song “Minding My Clarity” from the Henry’s Child album “Clearly Confused”.

Andrew intended his lyrics to be about defining your own reality and creating your identity. Rich remembers a review for “Clearly Confused” where the author said that Henry’s Child “lulls you in and grabs you by the throat”, which is discussed by the crew in this episode.

This extraordinarily simple song resonates with many fans, especially on a lyrical level because many folks can relate to “not being lost, just looking around”.

There is a level of authenticity that this song that brings up in the differences between writing songs back in the 90’s, where we sanded the edges at live shows and how we write now, being mostly in the Recording Studio working on a new record.

We talk about some of the most important lines like: “I am the center of all I survey” and “I’ll take the credit for every success and the blame for each failure to be...” These are about acceptance and understanding, truly understanding, what it means to take responsibility.

We discuss a secret access to the balcony for the long view but unable to control when that occurs, which is part of what makes writing songs in Henry’s Child so great. Enjoy this thoroughly nerdy interpretation of the first song on “Clearly Confused”.
