We conclude the heartbreaking story of Matthew Shepard by discussing his the effect his legacy had on the queer community. A trigger warning is still in place as other hate crimes will be discussed as well as the horrendous reactions of some anti-gay groups. Despite the many obstacles, Matthews family and friends have spent the last 20 years seeking justice for the LGBTQ community. Their tireless efforts and never-ending support directly attributed to many of the legal rights we enjoy today. Though Matt’s death was violent and senseless, his loved ones have been able to give his legacy a purpose.
