EPISODE 21: SUPERMAN YEAR ONE

The Last Sons reunite for what would have to be a seminal run for Superman's canon!

The pair of Aussie Kryptonians take a look at Frank Miller and John Romita Jr's polarising first issue of SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE - a book many a Super-fan has either excitedly anticipated or approached with caution.

Does it live up to the hype?

Check out what the boys have to say, amongst other random chat including Connor's less than salubrious stint in High School, and Rey's lament at missing the Bat-Boat!

SHOW NOTES:

SYNOPSIS:

(Written by Rey-Zod)

Fleeing from planetary Armageddon, the last son of Krypton crash lands into a small rural town of Smallville. A humble and kind couple take in the alien child and raise him as best they can, despite the extraordinary abilities he displays.

As the young boy (now named Clark) grows up, he discovers his remarkable abilities of heat vision, flight and super senses and it’s these abilities which he slowly learns to control in order to prevent hurting those around him and himself.

Time goes by and the young Clark eventually attends the local school, Smallville High. He finds  kinship with a motley band of students who lie on the fringes of acceptance within school life. It’s the local bullies which make life difficult for Clark and difficult for him to restrain himself. Guidance from his past life and his upbringing from the Kents manage to restrain Clark and even though he manages to keep a level head and not unleash upon the cruel bullies, Clark lands himself in trouble and in the Principal’s office.

Feeling even more alien than ever, Clark soon finds that the bullies are unrelenting and continue to assault his hapless friends. Lana Lang approaches Clark (of whom both harbour a secret admiration for each other) and reveals that she has photographic evidence which can implicate the bullies once and for all. She and Clark organise a rendezvous later that evening to further discuss how to nab the troublemakers and unbeknownst to them, one of Clark’s friends overhears them and informs the juveniles of their plans.

That evening, Lana is tricked into leaving her house and is ambushed by the motley crew, intent on making her pay. Clark arrives to save her and immediately after he reveals his true self to Lana by flying her in his arms up into the sky, consolidating the feelings they have for one another.

Clark and Lana share happy times together and Clark even starts to relax his restraint in public as he yearns to break free and show everyone just exactly what he can do. This results in Clark uncharacteristically winning a football match almost single handedly and looking on from the bleachers, Clark’s father, Jonathan is not pleased.

Jonathan is unhappy with Clark’s use of his powers for personal gain and advises Clark to put his abilities to greater use.

Coupled with a curiosity to see the world, Clark enlists in the Navy, leaving his parents, Lana and Smallville behind.
