In the 1540's Henry VIII began what economists have called the greatest monetary treason ever committed against citizens. What was this con job? The Great Debasement, when coins went from containing about 92% silver to less than 30%. More money to make war on France! And Ireland! Only not. It backfired. Royally and majestically.
