Lupus is an auto-immune disorder that can present with mild or severe symptoms. The body attacks itself causing fatigue, fever, joint pain, rashes, memory issues, and hair loss.
Often these symptoms will become much worse during lupus flares. During a lupus flare, some patients will require hospitalization to receive steroids, pain medications, and supportive treatment. Many organs in the body can be damaged by lupus, including the intestine, lungs, kidneys, and bones.
Selena Gomez is a famous celebrity who developed severe kidney failure due to lupus and ultimately received a kidney transplant. There is a strong family history with lupus. More women are affected than men.
There is no cure for lupus, but it can be managed by a rheumatologist and other specialists.
