EP 53 Evolve Your Life: Kathryn Budig
Media Type |
audio
Publication Date |
Aug 28, 2018
Episode Duration |
00:48:44

Internationally celebrated yoga teacher, writer, and podcaster, Kathryn Budig is constantly creating and reinventing the business of her dreams. She talks with Sheri and Nancy about her message to herself and others to “aim true,” how to turn overwhelm into passion and openness, her love of a great quinoa bowl, and why we shouldn’t be afraid to swerve out of our lane (but not because we are texting) and into our dreams.

She’s the cover girl of this month’s Yoga Journal, the co-host of the popular podcast alongside her love Kate Fagan, and all around free cookie.

Takeaways

[6:08] Sheri’s recent coffee shop visit leads to a Public Service Announcement. When out in public, keep your humming, singing and Whitney Houston inspired song-belting to a thoughtful and respectful volume. Save your version of “The Greatest Love of All” for karaoke night.

[7:39] It’s easy to feel frazzled and frayed in our fast-paced and ever ringing and dinging society. Stay committed to your “non-negotiables”, those things that make you feel like the best version of yourself. A cup of warm lemon water and tea, some soul journaling and morning meditation can go a very long way in creating a sense of peace within even the most chaotic of days. It’s even more important to do this when you feel like you don’t have the time.

[8:36] Second PSA: don’t text and drive! It’s not worth it, and it can wait. Use the minutes (or hours for the other LA folks) in traffic to take a mindful sip of green juice, look around you or practice some deep breathing. Give yourself permission to take a beat.

[15:43] Kathryn encourages us to start small with yoga. Even just 20 minutes every couple of days is a huge game changer. It’s about creating a sustainable practice that can maintain your interest. Starting off the day with some basic sun salutations gets the blood flowing and opens your body. It’s also something that costs no money and can be done anywhere.

[21:31] Kathryn loves to shake things up and explores her whole lifescape with interest and curiosity. She shows us that it’s okay to jump out of the box people want to put us in with an ignited interest in whatever floats your boat. Her life philosophy is to “aim true,” even if you aren’t sure what it is you are pointing at, or if you change your path many times.

[27:23] Kathryn shares the evolution of her Romance & Sex Pillar, and how she discovered what she really desired in a true partnership. Sher and Nance agree that we tend to tell ourselves fairy tales or horror stories about love when in reality, it is somewhere in the middle. It’s not singing cartoon bluebirds, nor is it everyone in our life fixating about our life choices.

[38:02] Kathryn’s and her soon wife-to-be Kate Fagan’s podcast is called Free Cookies. They cover all their favorite topics including friendship, food, wellness, pop culture and their very own relationship.

[41:23] Kathryn finds making, serving, and eating food a great way to communicate love and nurture herself and those around her. She enjoys a mostly plant-based diet but also doesn’t label herself and tunes directly into what her body really needs.

[45:32] Fun fact: Famed yoga teacher and spiritual activist, Seane Corne is going to marry Kathryn and Kate!
