We spoke to him at the time, while he was still working on getting it published elsewhere. The story has since come out and won a National Magazine Award. We follow up to figure out what he knew that the Toronto Star didn't want him to publish. During the conversation, a new story emerges about mental health in the newsroom.
Paul writes extensively about his years as a war correspondent and his mental health struggles in his 2007 memoir Where War Lives. His latest book is Ice Ghosts: The Epic Hunt for the Lost Franklin Expedition.
