Welcome Book Club and Episode 2088 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Richard Hough. Today Richard is in conversation with Don and Petie Kladsturp, authors of, amongst other things, Wine & War: The French, the Nazis, and France’s Greatest Treasure. On the bookshelf: The books discussed in today’s show include: The Dead Lions series by Mick Herron The Shardlake series and Winter in Madrid by C.J. Sansom The Lady from the Black Lagoon by Mallory O’Meara The Billy Boyle series by James R. Benn Who Dares Wins by Dominic Sandbrook   More about today’s guests: Don and Petie Kladstrup are former journalists, longtime residents of France and authors of three books, all wine-related but based around three wars that shook the world. Their first, "Wine & War: the French, the Nazis and the Battle for France’s Greatest Treasure,"is an international best-seller and tells the story of how French wine producers in World War II struggled to survive under the Nazi occupation.  Their second book, "Champagne: How the World’s Most Glamorous Wine Triumphed Over War and Hard Times," revolves around World War I when nearly everything in that part of France was destroyed. Like "Wine & War," it's been translated into more than a dozen languages and become a hit worldwide.  In their third book, "Champagne Charlie: the Frenchman Who Taught Americans to Love Champagne," Don and Petie went further back in time to tell how a daring young Frenchman set off for America to seek his fortune but ended up being arrested as a spy for the South in the U.S. Civil War   Connect: Website: https://www.donandpetiekladstrup.com/   More about the host Richard Hough: Richard Hough is the editor, translator and project curator behind Wine Democracy and Vine and Prejudice.
