It’s an international break, so on this week’s football-language podcast we feature games from
the Nation’s League, including England v Croatia, and the qualification for the
2019 African nations Cup. That’s in our predictions section. We also review some of the football stories from the week and have a football related quiz question. And of course, we feature some football language – this week ‘laces’. Learn English Through Football Podcast: England v Croatia
DB: You are listening to
languagecaster.com’s football-language podcast. Welcome everyone to the podcast for all those interested in improving their English skills and who love
the beautiful game of football. My name is Damon and it’s early evening here in Tokyo, Japan, and we’ve enjoyed some nice weather this weekend, mostly sunny but if course cool as winter approaches. It’s peak autumn leaves season, or Kouyou as it’s called in Japanese, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to get out to the mountain areas around Tokyo for the best views. How about London, Damian? How is the autumn weather there?
DF: Hello Damon, and hello to all the listeners. The weather here has been quite good here – a little cold but bright and dry; good football weather! Have you watched any football this week, Damon?
DB: Actually, I haven’t been able to watch any. The international games we don’t get over here in Japan. How about you?
DF: Well, I watched the Copa Libertadores final last weekend which was a wonderful occasion and I also saw two matches from the UEFA Nations League and both were really good games. First up I saw England come from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 at Wembley and then last night I saw another come-from-behind victory as Switzerland defeated Belgium, the number 1 side in the world, 5-2 in an extraordinary game. Belgium were winning 2-0 and needed to avoid a two-goal defeat to qualify for the Nations League semi-finals but ended up losing and going out of the competition!
Line-up
DB: OK, let’s take a look. Well, we’ll start, first of all, with a football-language quiz – last week, we had ‘consolation goal’, a goal that has no impact on the result but may make a player, a team or fans feel a bit better. And this week’s question is connected with the big derby in the Copa Libertadores, Boca Juniors versus River Plate, which you’ve already mentioned. And after that we’ve got more football language language later in the show when we explain ‘laces’ and an interesting phrase connected to this noun. But before that, we’ll have some of the news stories from the football world in our good, bad, and ugly review section. And right before the end of the show, it’s predictions with some Nations League games and a match from the Africa Nations Cup qualifying groups. Lot’s of stuff to get through!
