The Tottenham vs Manchester City game on Monday night is the big one, and we’ll talk about that match in our predictions section. Also on the show, we explain the football phrase ‘
fringe player‘, and review some of the stories from the football world, including a nice story on
Dulwich Hamlet FC. If you’d like the transcript to the show – great for learners and teachers of English – please show your support by becoming a patron (

English Through Football Podcast: 2018 Tottenham vs Manchester City
Transcript of the show (28th October 2018)
DB: This is
Languagecaster.com’s football-language podcast. Hello and welcome everyone. this podcast is all about football, and is perfect for those wanting to improve their English skills and who love the beautiful game. My name’s Damon and I’m living in Tokyo, Japan, where the weather has been nice and cool, with a little rain, some clouds, and enough sunshine to keep everyone cheerful! And down the line is Damian in London. Damian, how’s the weather over there and what football have you been watching?
DF: Hi Damon and hello to all our listeners. Well, the clocks have changed here in the UK which means that the mornings will be a little lighter but it also means that London is now nine hours behind Tokyo Damon! We’re an hour further away. The weather has taken a wintry turn and temperatures have dropped here in London while we have lots of rain and wind as well – winter is coming!.
As for football, I watched Tottenham draw against Dutch side PSV in the Champions League on Wednesday – we’ll be talking more about that game in our review of the week. I also saw the Barcelona game versus Inter in the same competition in which Barca comfortably defeated the Italian side, while I managed to watch the Leicester City versus West Ham Premier League match yesterday, which we will also be discussing in our football review of the week. How about you, what matches did you watch this week?
DB: Well, I watched Liverpool v Crvena Zvezda, known to most English speakers as Red Star Belgrade. Obviously with Liverpool winning comfortably 4-0 – I was pretty pleased! I also saw Juventus and their game at Manchester United – the Italian side looked very good indeed!
DF: Yes, probably a team that should make it to the later stages of the Champions League and may go all the way – they looked very confident, but it is still early days. What’s on this week’s show?
Line-up
DB: OK, we start with a football-language quiz and there will be a ‘
clasico‘ flavour to this week’s question. We then have our English for football expression, which this week is ‘
fringe player‘. After that we review some of the language that has emerged from the week in the good, the bad and the ugly. Then we finish off the show with our
predictions competition.
