This week the Nova Scotia Legislature voted unanimously to recognize Aug. 1 as Emancipation Day in this province, following a similar move by the federal government. August 1, 1834, was the day the Slavery Abolition Act came into force throughout much of the British Empire. Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard and Vanessa Fells with the African Nova Scotian Decade for People of African Descent Coalition spoke with host Jeff Douglas about the meaning behind the day.
