Elie Mystal is Justice Correspondent at The Nation and he’s back to discuss the current threat against Affirmative Action via our Supreme Court. SCOTUS took up two cases–one from Harvard and one from UNC, but Elie explains they are fundamentally the same case: a group of Asian-American students claim they outperform African-Americans and Latinos, but are still underrepresented at their universities. And in certain ways, their claims are valid–but the big problem stems from the person hiding behind those students, and is responsible for putting them up to it in the first place: Ed Blum. And if you don’t know Ed Blum, he’s made it his life’s work to unravel civil rights advancements. It’s a complicated situation with a lot of nuance but Elie breaks it down in his expert fashion to help us understand what’s at stake and why the conversative supreme court could our worst fears through this time around.
