We are wired to be wary of the unfamiliar: it helps us to stay safe. When this wariness goes unchallenged, it can turn into unhelpful bias. Sometimes this bias can be deadly, as shown by the rates of incarceration and death in custody of aboriginal people. To unwind bias, we need to address the systems that perpetuate it.
