"Dr. Livingstone, I Presume?"-Born John Rowland to a prostitute in England in 1841 who promptly abandoned him, Henry Morton Stanley emigrated to America in 1861, joined the Confederate Army, was wounded at Shiloh, captured, and became a "galvanized" Yankee, before joining the Union Navy.
