Django Unchained is Tarantino’s most successful film at the Box Office. It’s also one of the more polarizing. We break it all down with our usual Oscar Lens, Non-Spoiler section first, and a not so hateful eight new segments unique to this Tarantino re-watch series. Layout of Our Tarantino Review Episodes - 1:54 NON-SPOILER REVIEW: Cast and Crew - 3:44 Specs - 8:59 Plot Premise/Where We First Saw It - 12:43 Production Values: Sight - 15:01 What Made Quentin Dance? - 19:02 Performances - 23:01 Script Thoughts/Homages - 28:25 Finishing the Oscars' Lens - 32:26 MMO Theater’s Spoiler Warning Scene - 34:12 SPOILER-FILLED REVIEW: Trademark Tarantino - 36:47 (Sneaky Classic Tarantino - 43:44) (New Tarantino + Un-Tarantino - 50:34) (Worsts, Lowlights, and An Important Discussion - 57:46) Tarantino’s Screenwriting Advice - 1:06:34 Easter Eggs/TarantinoVerse Building - 1:09:41 Your Homework/Our Social Medias/TALK TO US! - 1:15:06 Coming Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 1:16:04 Django Unchained broke new ground while also respecting the past. Of course, the horrific subject matter required some brutal scenes, perhaps some of the more grueling in cinematic history. But Tarantino used so many homages, narrative tricks, and action film spectacle that we don’t dwell in the powerless nightmare of the time period. On the emphatic contrary, Django Unchained stands as one of the most thrilling emotional roller coasters of the decade, soaring to heights the genre has perhaps never achieved, while reminding us of what so many American heroes have endured to get us here. We re-live it all in this movie review, our 10th episode in this Tarantino Re-Watch Series. The format remains a blend of both our normal Oscar Sprint Profile / Movie Event Review format with a not so hateful eight new segments. That means, you’re gonna get a non-spoiler section first, where we’ll cover the production history of the film and go behind the scenes. We’ll also review the production values, performances, and script without talking plot specifics in this section, and all of it, we do through an Oscar Lens. Non-spoilers also features our first watch stories, what made Quentin dance (in the soundtrack), and a fun list of homages Tarantino makes to other films. Then to warn you of spoilers, MMO theater performs a scene from the film, and we dive into Trademark Tarantino, where we discuss the classic, underrated, and innovative moments, scenes, & sequences in the movie. As we must, there is a segment for worst scenes, and we give the regrettable aspects of the film their due as well. But we remain mostly positive as we move into a screenwriting analysis from there with a look at Screenwriting Advice From Quentin Tarantino before enjoying a speculative discussion about all of the Easter Eggs & Connections to the Tarantino-verse. As always, we want to know what you think. Did Quentin pull this off? We realize it’s a polarizing film, and we’re certainly open to the critical angles as much as the film appreciation. It’s kind of what we did here, and what we always try to do. But if you think the scales should have tipped more toward the former, do let us know.
