Submit ReviewToday the crew of Brokebot Mountain invites author Curtis Craddock to discuss the 2009 Oscar nominated film, District 9 written by Terri Tatchell and directed by Neill Blomkamp. David, Phil, and Curt discuss the heavy-handed nature of Blomkamp films, pig tossing in combat zones, and of course Curt’s new book! “An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors”. All this and more this week, on one of the funniest episodes ever on Brokebot Mountain!
The film opens with a documentary-style series of interviews that introduce the story: twenty years prior, an alien ship arrives above Johannesburg, South Africa. It hovers above the city for three months without any contact; eventually humans take the initiative and cut into the ship. They discover a large group of aliens who are malnourished and sick. The aliens are later assessed as being “workers”, with their leadership mysteriously missing (it is hypothesized that a plague may have wiped out all of the leadership-caste). Grainy footage shows part of the ship (supposedly a command module) falling to Earth, but nobody has been able to find it, leaving the ship still hovering but inoperable.
In a world of soaring continents and bottomless skies, where a burgeoning new science lifts skyships into the cloud-strewn heights, and ancient blood-borne sorceries cling to a fading glory, Princess Isabelle des Zephyrs is about to be married to a man she has barely heard of, the second son of a dying king in an empire sliding toward civil war.
Born without the sorcery that is her birthright, but with a perspicacious intellect and insight to spare, Isabelle hopes her marriage will stave off the disastrous conflict and bring her opportunity and influence. But the last two women betrothed to this prince were murdered, and a sorcerer-assassin is bent on making Isabelle the third. Fiercely defended by her brave and loyal musketeer, Jean-Claude, Isabelle plunges into a great maze of prophecy, intrigue, and betrayal, where everyone wears masks of glamor and lies. Step by dangerous step, she unravels the plot of an immortal madman intent on destroying the world and using Isabelle to remake it in his own twisted image.
