I took Dr. John Demartini’s values assessment the other day. In his assessment, he mentions not hitting your goals due to incongruence in your values and your boundaries. I think this is huge and wanted to know more about why that is. What does it take to achieve your maximum potential while sticking to your values? Dr. John Demartini explained that every human being, regardless of gender, age, or culture, lives moment by moment with a unique set of priorities or values. Things that are most important to the least important in their life. Whatever is highest on that list of values, which in his case is teaching and research, you are spontaneously inspired from within to achieve it. You’re willing to embrace both pain and pleasure in the pursuit of it. And so, your endurance and patience are very high. Dr. John Demartini finds, many times, that people compare themselves to other people, they put other people on a pedestal, and minimize themselves. They inject other people’s values in their life, and attempt to envy and imitate other people. People lose themselves and what’s truly important to them, trying to be somebody they’re not and wondering why they don’t have the capacity or the persistence to keep achieving what they say they want, when in fact they’re too busy doing what is actually higher on their value without them being conscious of it. But whatever’s low on your value is more of an extrinsic value, and you tend to have to add to that motivation, reward to do it or punishment if you don’t do it, to get you to do it. And so, you procrastinate, hesitate, and get frustrated. So, if you set goals that are incongruent and not aligned with what your highest value is, you have a decreasing probability of pursuing it, persevering towards it, and being willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it.
