Submit ReviewCreator of Never Skip Brunch and host of Make Space Podcast, DIY Queen Cara Newhart is joining me to chat all things design and is sharing how you can create your Pinterest worthy room even if you have toddlers running around! Cara started a corporate career in the oil and gas industry and launched a blog as her side hustle. After having her daughter, she was able to channel even more creativity into her blog and make it her full-time gig. She is now empowering women to do more DIY, create spaces that are their sanctuary and is collaborating with big names like Home Depot.
Let’s start designing!
What we’re talking about
Creating A Living Space That Is About You
Cara’s most recent project was converting her garage into a girl cave with lots of color, a seating area and a workbench. She shares that the most important thing when designing your space is to make it about you. Have a vision of what you want, how it makes you feel and how the room should function. Don’t buy one piece at a time, but tackle the project with a mood board or swatch book in order to match different pieces. Pick one room at a time to work in and learn from each project as you go.
Designing A Room Using Color & Paint
Using color is like getting your crayons back as an adult. Enjoy the ability to make your space yours and use color in painting a wall or an entire room. Paint is design tip 101 because it’s inexpensive and easily changed. Don’t be afraid to be bold and have fun with color, but think about why you like the colors you like. Discover how they make you feel and what feeling you want to have in the room you’re designing. For those of you afraid of paint and color, start with some throw pillows or look into removable wallpaper.
How To Design A Pinterest Worthy Room With Toddlers
As a mom of two tiny humans, I know how hard it can be to design a space that looks Pinterest worthy while also making it function for your young kids. Cara suggests we change our frame of thinking and remember that having young kids is a season and therefore your living space should serve the season your life is in. You’re never going to finish decorating a room, so allow yourself the ability to change it. Storage should be the most important thing in your design, but find cubes and ottomans that allow for this function and look good. Designing with young kids isn’t about buying heirloom pieces, but about finding functionality and being ok with purchasing things you know won’t last for decades to come.
What living space are you inspired to design?
