When people lose their insurance, they often stop making appointments for primary care. Atul Gawande recently wrote for The New Yorker about the importance of primary care. He fears that the repeal of the Affordable Care Act will lead to a decline in patients seeking primary care and thus a rise in preventable deaths. But it’s just as conceivable, he says, that a Republican plan that modifies the A.C.A. rather than repealing it could result in more states that accept the program and more Americans who receive coverage.

David Remnick speaks to Atul Gawande about the end of Obamacare.
