This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for March 1st, 2021.

It’s approved and already on the way. Nearly 4 million doses, the entire stockpile, of Johnson & Johnson’s one dose vaccine shipped last night and are on their way to states for injections that could start tomorrow. Johnson & Johnson will deliver about 16 million more doses by the end of March and 100 million total by the end of June.

In the U.K., rising concern about a Brazil variant of the virus. Three cases found in England and three in Scotland. The Scottish residents had flown from Brazil by way of Paris and London. Officials are still trying to track down one of those who tested positive in England. The hope is existing vaccines can be rapidly adapted to fight the variant.

Anyone crossing the border between the Moselle region of France and Germany must have proof they tested negative in the previous 48 hours. 16,000 French workers cross that border every day. Germany says that area of France is a concern due to the spread of the South Africa variant of the virus.

We’ve been reporting in this podcast that Alaska’s a leader with regard to vaccinations. Now, in the remote island town of Sitka, things have been running so efficiently, they’re done seeing those at high risk and are now offering vaccines to everyone 16 and older. They’ll be among the first teens in the U.S. to get it.

More bad news for those with obesity. It’s already a comorbidity known to make serious cases and hospitalizations more likely. Now data suggests the Pfizer vaccine may not be as effective in this group of people. Italian researchers found healthcare workers with obesity produced about half the antibodies after a second dose compared to others.

In the United States cases were down 28%, deaths are down 22%, and hospitalizations down 30% over 14 days. The 7-day average of new cases has been trending up since February 21. 

There are now 9,035,262 active cases in the United States. The current top 5 states by number of active cases: California, New York, Florida, Arizona, and Virginia.

The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Caldwell, KY. La Salle, TX. Calhoun, TX. Aleutians West Census Area, AK. Johnson, WY. Marengo, AL. Cimarron, OK. Concho, TX. Kane, UT. And Petersburg Borough, AK.

The five states with the highest risk levels and most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are Rhode Island, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, and Georgia.

There have been 513,091 deaths in the US reported as Covid-related, with a current national fatality rate of 1.8%.

The states with the most new deaths reported as COVID-related: California 234. Texas 187. Virginia 170. Florida 113. New York 107. Pennsylvania 75. Ohio 58. Massachusetts 51. Oklahoma 49. And South Carolina 32.  

The top 3 vaccinating states by percentage of population that’s had at least one dose, Alaska at 22.3%, New Mexico at 21%, and South Dakota at 20.2%. The bottom 3 vaccinating states are Georgia at 12.1%, Utah at 12.2%, and Texas at 12.4%.

Globally, cases were down 3%, and deaths down 23% over 14 days, with the 7-day average trending up since February 21.  

There are now 21,901,615 active cases around the world.

The five countries with the most new cases: the United States 49,412. Brazil 34,027. France 19,952. Italy 17,455. And India 15,616.

 

There have now been 2,530,004 deaths reported as Covid-related worldwide.
