This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for Saturday May 23rd, 2020. Speaking at a White House press conference Friday, Dr. Birx said the Washington DC Metro has the highest rate of people testing positive in the country. Because the metro includes Washington DC and counties in Virginia and Maryland, the overall count of the area can be misleading. Washington DC proper, has the 5th highest case count with 1,118 per 100,000 residents. But add in the counties that comprise the metro area and according to Dr. Birx, it takes the top spot. The DC Metro accounts for 60% of average daily infections for The District, Maryland and Virginia, reports The Washington Post. Virginia and Maryland began easing restrictions last week, but both state’s kept restrictions in place for counties nearest the Washington DC metro.

The CDC revealed that it has been combining tests for active COVID-19, with tests for the antibody. This can be misleading as antibody tests do not test for current infection or indicate if someone is contagious, just that they had been previously exposed. Speaking to the press Friday, President Trump said that houses of worship are essential and should “open right now”. And that he will “override the governors” if states do not allow them to reopen. The Vice President said negotiations for another stimulus package are “actively underway”. For the first time since March, more than 300,000 passed through airport security yesterday. Parts of Long Island and some other New York City suburbs may start reopening next week, if virus metrics continue to decline. Miami will reopen beaches and hotels to visitors on June 1st.

The President of Brazil says quarantines and lockdowns will be more detrimental to the economy than the virus. Nearly 20,000 new cases were logged there yesterday. Brazil has the third highest case count in the world. Peru has extended their “state of emergency” through the end of June. China reported zero deaths due to COVID-19 on Saturday.

The locations of hotspots and U.S and Country diagnoses in a moment.
