But in the Philippines, 'national' architecture has been contested, thanks in part to Imelda Marcos's edifice complex — a woman not known for aesthetic subtlety. But iconic architecture outlives the passing parade of politics, and the work of Filipino architect Francisco Mañosa has played an important role in establishing a proud and more equable national identity.
