NBAs, Come Back Part 2 Episode 55 Coffee Girl. 100 39th St, Astoria, OR 97103 Once again we are back in “gritty and pretty” Astoria Oregon. Discover what gritty actually means, and feast your eyes on the oldest & hippest town in Oregon. Our first guest, Betsy Wentworth, owner of Coffee Girl has the best two word answer for “how do you keep employees”. She found out just how loyal her employees were when catastrophe struck. What would you do with your business if you woke up in a hospital bed and saw relatives from around the US standing at your bedside. Coffee Girl has mouth watering pastries, and scones that attract locals every day.  And why would a friend travel a long distance just to make her scones. People may disagree about what makes a good scone, but Betsy’s answer is definitive. There were three lessons she learned while attending coffee school in Portland and says number three was the most important. What was it, and why does it make Coffee Girl so successful. As a twenty something her car broke down in Prescott Arizona, and how did that incident eventually lead her to Astoria. Monica left a position in the medical arena to become a barista, and her explanation probably won't surprise anyone. What happens to your son when you take him to a Warp concert (in utero) ? A barista at Coffee Girl, Monica explains the consequences of that action, that occurred 15 years later. If you are an avid reader Jim Keryan offers some sage advice to authors ( and for that matter anyone) who want to write or to start reading a 10 volume series, on anything! A storm with 140 mph winds blows down a power line, and you witness someone trying to pick it up.What did he do, and what happened to the good Samaritan? Ask Jim how so many eclectic characters ended up where the west runs out of room. Alyssa Ponferroda journeyed with her father, back to his home in the Philippines. How did the locals know she was “ American”, and are the driving laws there just a suggestion? How about the art of bartering, did pursed lips and chin gestures work for her?  Were her preconceived notions about the Filipino people, and her "roots" country, enforced or challenged once she got there? Although an American citizen, her culinary heritage remains strong. When a non-Filipino loves a food, (dinuguan), not knowing what it is, should she be told the main ingredients?  Or maybe keep that to yourself! Ella Bellissimo says, for her, the less like coffee something tastes the more she likes it! That doesn’t distract from her talents as a great..... barista? When her parents purchased a house whose owners had died, they discovered it was haunted. How did they know, and were they afraid? Even though her dad was OK with ghosts, Ella likes her ghosts to have a little more gusto. Did they even discuss bringing in an Exorcist? Don’t worry, the previous owners weren’t murdered...or were they?
