Garrett Bush of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of The Locked on Browns Podcast discusses the knee injury of 2nd year receiver Anthony Schwartz. The young wide receiver walked off field at Browns training camp with a left knee injury. Browns second-year receiver Anthony Schwartz has been eager to put his star-crossed rookie year behind him and live up to his status as a 2021 third-round draft pick.

But he suffered a setback Thursday at practice when he pulled up during a route on air with a left knee injury. He was examined on the field by a trainer, and then they walked off the field together and into the fieldhouse, with Schwartz wearing a towel on his head. The Browns later announced that he’ll be further evaluated, which likely means an MRI or other imaging tests.

The good news was that he didn’t need to be carted off, and didn’t appear to be limping on his way inside. He walked slowly and deliberately, but didn’t appear to be in any distress.

The Browns were awaiting word on Schwartz’s injury after practice, and it doesn’t help matters that this year’s third-round receiver, David Bell, is currently on the active/Physically Unable to Perform list with a foot injury, possibly a slight stress fracture. Bell, who’s expected back in a couple of weeks, worked with a trainer off to the side during practice Thursday.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday he didn’t think the Browns would need to sign another receiver with Bell out, but that could change if Schwartz misses time. In the meantime, it gives a young receiver like sixth-round pick Michael Woods II a chance to get more reps, and he’s making the most of them. Schwartz’s latest injury comes after pulling a hamstring in rookie minicamp last year, and missing most of training camp. It set him back for the season, and he struggled to catch up.

He was also involved in Baker Mayfield’s torn labrum in his left non-throwing shoulder, when he stopped on his route in Week 2 against the Texans and the ball was picked off by Justin Reid. Mayfield tore the labrum when he tried to make the tackle and Reid lowered his head and trucked right through him. A world-class sprinter, Schwartz finished the season with only 10 catches on 23 targets for 135 yards and one touchdown. But the Browns expect him to bounce back season.

“He’s not forgotten by me or us,” coach Kevin Stefanski said during draft weekend. “We’re counting on him to have a big year. We’re excited about his development. We’re excited about what Anthony brings to the table.”

Schwartz hoped to put his turbulent rookie season in the rearview mirror and prove his critics wrong in 2022.

“There were a lot of ups and down, a lot of craziness that happened,” he told cleveland.com. “But I’ll still look back on and appreciate every opportunity I had. The best thing is, it can only go up from there.”
