It was a case of throw off the duvet and open the windows right across Canterbury on Tuesday night after Christchurch recorded its hottest January day since 1979. The mercury nudged 36.7 degrees in the early evening and was still in the late twenties at 11pm. Conan Young ventured out earlier in the evening to the city's sun-baked streets to see how people were coping. [audio_p[ay] MetService says the heat will be short lived, as a front is expected to move up the country from later on Wednesday through to Friday. That will bring a cooler change to end the working week. And those high temperatures in Canterbury? The mercury is expected to reach only the mid-teens on Friday.
