Madison Hager was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer at 29, just months into the coronavirus pandemic.  Today she reads her piece “The Chocolate Chip Cookie That Broke the Camel’s Back” from Wildfire Magazine’s 2021 “Body” issue.  It’s about facing her pre-cancer demons while simultaneously facing cancer. The modern conception of a cancer survivor is that they are enlightened, and have all the answers to living joyfully and with fulfillment.  But oftentimes, whoever you were before cancer, whatever anxieties or pre-occupations you had before diagnosis, they will still be there. Madison and April will discuss cancer misconceptions, cancer meeting you where you are, illness shaming, and bargaining for measures of control in cancer.  They’ll also touch on how the writing process can transform a question into a path direction. Please note, this episode contains depictions of and discussion around disordered eating, and explicit language.
