California aims to learn from Europe's tough-on-big-tech approach to AI regulation, with at least 30 proposed bills addressing various aspects of the technology. Inspired by the European Union's (EU) recent legislative actions on AI, such as the recently passed AI Act, California state legislators are proposing laws ranging from disclosing data used to train models to banning election ads with computer-generated features. Some proposed bills also focus on regulating deepfakes and non-consensual deepfake pornography. While industry association NetChoice opposes importing European-style AI regulation into the United States, Adobe supports the EU's risk-based approach to AI. California's efforts in AI regulation may set a precedent for future regulation across the US.
