Has this ever happened to you? Recently, I was playing a Harry Potter Trivia game with my friends. The question was: How was the Diadem of Ravenclaw Horcrux destroyed? I definitely know this answer, my favorite book is Deathly Hallows, and I’m a Ravenclaw, this question hits my sweet spot of Harry Potter knowledge. My friend Angela and I are on a team against our husbands…I shout out ‘lexicon.org/magic/fiendfyre/">Fiendfyre’ at the same time Angela says ‘lexicon.org/thing/basilisk-parts/">Basilisk fang’. We look at each other. I don’t want to tell Angela straight up that she’s wrong, so I convince her that I know it’s definitely Fiendfyre and that we should go with my answer. She agrees. ‘Incorrect,’ says Angela’s husband. ‘It’s basilisk fang.’ Wait, wait, wait a minute! How could I be wrong? I start to question everything I ever thought I knew about the boy who lived and his harrowing story. But I snap out of it and know that I am not wrong and I know how to prove it. I grab my phone and look up the lexicon.org/thing/diadem-of-ravenclaw/">diadem page on the Harry Potter Lexicon website. ‘No, you’re incorrect,’ I announce. ‘The Lexicon says that it was lexicon.org/event/diadem-horcrux-destroyed-fiendfyre/">destroyed by Fiendfyre.’ I take a small moment to relish in my victory before stopping to wonder: why does this trivia game say basilisk fang? Turns out with more digging around on the internet we confirm that in the movies, Harry stabs the diadem with a basilisk fang and then Ron kicks it into the Room of Requirement which is full of Fiendfyre. This trivia game was about movie knowledge, not book knowledge, the next couple of questions would confirm this. I like the Harry Potter movies, but the books are far superior in my opinion, hence those are the facts I store in my head. So, Angela and I were both correct, but Angela was correct within the trivia game, and since our final answer was the book version we didn’t get that point. I checked the box of the game and it did not specify whether it was movie or book facts it was looking for. How do you find out before hand which vault of knowledge you are supposed to open? I would not have been so cocky if I knew it wasn’t all about the books.
