When the news broke in September 2014 that 43 students went missing outside Iguala, Mexico, everyone
was baffled. How could dozens of people simply vanish? In the hours leading up to the disappearance,
the students had left the rural town of Ayotzinapa to attend a Mexico City protest. The case, referred to as
the Ayotzinapa 43, received international press coverage and brought to light some stark realities about
Mexico. What led to the mass disappearance? Why and how did 43 people go missing?
