Due to COVID-19, many Asian people around the world are experiencing heightened racism like nothing before. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 originating from Wuhan, China, hygiene practises in Asian countries and culture are being questioned by the global community.  Videos like these are damaging to the Asian community because it generalises all Asian people and allows people to write hurtful comments like: “Imagine the habits they have behind closed doors especially when they work in the food industry” - one user wrote under the video Sure, it can be easy to just say all Asians are dirty and unhygienic  (rewind) but perhaps first... maybe we should talk about some useful hygiene practises.  #1 -No shoes in the house You know you’re at an Asian household when you see a massive shoe rack at the front door.  Almost in every Asian house, guests are required to take off their shoes before entering the house.  The reason is quite simple - there is a lot of germs and bacteria that you collect from your outdoor activities - According to the University of Arizona your shoes have 421,000 bacteria! So, please. Take off your shoes before you enter your house!  #2 - Hand washing dishes There’s a lot of jokes about Asian parents not using dishwashers and preferring to hand-wash each plate.  But if there was one thing that we all learnt from COVID-19, it is how important using soap and disinfectants are.  When Asian people wash dishes, we make sure that each plate is scrubbed with soap and washed off with fresh clean water - no soaking it all in the same old water!  #3 Showering before sleeping  It is the old-age debate in the Western world about whether to shower in the morning or at night.  But in Asian culture, we get taught by our parents to change into home clothes when arriving back home and taking a nice warm shower before bed.  The reason? You’re covered in sweat & germs throughout the day and you don’t want to bring all of that back into your home.  And plus, it’s relaxing to have a warm shower before bed!  #4 Wearing a mask when you’re sick In the early days of COVID-19, many people in the Western world were confronted and offended when Asian people began wearing face masks..  However, fast-forward a month or two later, there is an international shortage of masks.  What most people don’t realise is that, Asian people wear face masks to prevent getting other people sick.  LEMON delivers the latest juice of celebrity & pop culture news, candid conversations with celebrities and influencers, as well as social and cultural topics from an Asian Australian perspective.
