The Lakers are in a pickle. Anthony Davis is on the shelf for, as reported by ESPN, "at least" two weeks. And given his history, the "at least" part of "at least" two weeks is likely doing a lot of heavy lifting. So let's say he misses three. How might that impact the playoff race? Because it would mean he'd be out for two games against the Clippers, the team the Lakers are chasing to try to reach the 8th seed in the West (a preferable placement for the play-in). Bigger picture, earlier this week ESPN's Stephen A. Smith made some waves by saying that the Lakers simply can't rely on Davis to be the cornerstone of the franchise when LeBron retires, based both on performance and availability. (And that was before this week's injury.) So with that in mind, they should trade him this summer. Is he right? What exactly would go into the Lakers trying to move him? What could they reasonably expect to get in return? Would it be possible to move Davis but not have to enter a rebuilding process? If not, what does that mean for James? Moreover, would the Lakers ever, in a million years, explore the sort of trade that would (in theory) replenish the assets the Lakers lost in the Davis trade with New Orleans, and look to construct a new winner? Can two things be true at once? That Davis isn't necessarily reliable... but trying to do better than Davis on the trade market will be very, very, very hard? And keep in mind, the Lakers are going to be considering all of this while also answering The Westbrook Question. Fun times! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Davis out for a little while. Can the Lakers hang on in games they need to win? SEGMENT 2: Should the Lakers feel comfortable building around Davis long term? SEGMENT 3: If the Lakers decided to trade Davis, how would that work?
