Submit ReviewThis week it's all about ultra endurance cycling. Guest Anna Haslock is Race Director for the Trans Continental Race (TCR.) It's a self-supported bike race across Europe, approximately 4,000km. The race was originally set up in 2012 by Haslock's partner, the late Mike Hall, who was one of the best endurance cyclists on the planet. They ran the race together for three years, until Mike's tragic death during a self-supported race across Australia. Anna has continued to organise the race following Mike's death and in 2019 the TCR caught the headlines around the world when a young German female Doctor, Fiona Kolbinger, won the race outright.
You'll hear:
06:50 What makes the Transcontinental race so special?
07:45 How Anna got involved - she admits she wasn't interested in bikes or cycling before she met Mike!
18:43 Anna explains the GC race is 15 days, but some people have taken over a month to complete the event
20:23 We find out what makes dot watching so gripping
24:05 How Anna goes about planning the route and the check points
30:20 Anna's favourite part of Europe
34:45 Striking the balance between racing and fatigue. It's just a race and nothing is more important than your health. "If you are too tired to be on the bike, you should not be on the bike"
36:15 The meaning behind the hashtag #Bemoremike It stands for being yourself, going for what you want but respecting others.
40:15 Her top tip for anyone applying? "Make sure you don't mind eating lots of 7 day croissants"
