Beth Ann Carpenter was the achiever in her family.  She got her law degree from a prestigious college and made plans for a successful life.  But Beth’s little sister Kim led a more difficult and less charmed life.  Kim was unemployed, divorced and living as a single mom by the time she reached her 20th birthday.

After Kim’s divorce, Beth and Kim’s parents took over much of the care of Kim’s child, Rebecca.  They had a lot of control over their granddaughter’s life.  Until Kim met and fell in love with Anson “Buzz” Clinton. Buzz was an exotic dancer with a reputation as a party guy who moved from one job to another.  Needless to say, the Carpenters did not approve.

Beth Ann used her knowledge and skills as an attorney to help her mother sue for custody of Rebecca.  But Buzz shocked everyone when he acted as Kim’s attorney and won the case for her.  Rebecca would remain in the custody of Kim, who lived in a converted tool shed with Buzz.

The matter of Rebecca’s custody became a volatile issue, tearing the Carpenter family apart.  Then Buzz told his mother that he wanted to move Kim and Rebecca away with him to Arizona.  He was found shot to death just weeks later.

At first, police believed that Buzz had gotten himself killed in a drug dispute.  As the truth came to light, however, a conspiracy to murder Buzz Clinton, led by Beth Ann Carpenter, was exposed.
