The United States is the only large, high-income nation that does not provide universal coverage to its citizens. Thousands of doctors have left the workforce, leaving many hospitals and clinics struggling. According to one study, one in five doctors says he or she plans to leave their practice in the coming years. Dr. Eric Reinhart writes for the New York Times, “what’s burning out health care workers is less the grueling conditions we practice under, ‌and more our dwindling faith in the systems for which we work.” What will it take to make universal healthcare and a robust social safety net a priority?
