Yalmay Yunupingu is a distinguished Yolŋu elder, and a champion of Indigenous education, in north-east Arnhem Land.

After qualifying as a teacher, she went on to forge a bilingual approach to teaching - and believes the best way forward is through training up local teachers who nurture and affirm Yolŋu language and culture. She spoke to Patricia Karvelas at Garma Festival about the importance of such an approach.
