It was when I was in college and the girl I had been seeing went into the Army—long story. Anyway, we tried to stay close for the first year, writing letters—the kind you use a pen and paper for, kids—talking on the phone, visiting when possible. Then she was transferred from a base in the south to one in Northern California. On my end, I was trying to transfer schools and work out there to be close to her but it was one hassle after the other. One day, I called her and a young man answered. I asked for her and he said, “Who’s this?” Who am I? I thought? Who are you? Turns out I said that out loud. “I’m her husband,” he said calmly. “Now who are you?” Order 'The Frisky 30-Day Breakup Guide' by Jamie Beckman, available from

Let's just say it's a bit of self-love for women who may be going through a break-up... A lot of women put their pleasure in the hands of men. Do something dirty to take your mind off the breakup. It'll at least work for five, ten minutes, depending on what kind of woman you are." “Oh, I’m her, uh, cousin,” I said. “I didn’t know she was married. When did that happen?” “Last week,” he said. “Turns out she’s pregnant.” I won’t bore you – or depress me – with the rest of the details. Just know that I was crushed and it took a long time to come out of that particular dark funk. The whole incident came back to me as I was looking through Jamie Beckman’s new book, The Frisky 30-Day Breakup Guide. In it, Beckman takes women through her own day-by-day recovery method for dealing with a torturous breakup. Has anyone ever done a book that for men? Doubtful. Instead of a spa treatment one day or Godiva chocolates the next, the guy equivalent would say the same thing everyday. Ten letters, starts with an “M, ” ends with “E”… Jamie Beckman • • • •
