Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of Saturday Night Fever fans who left the theater and couldn’t stop cursing like a mofo for months – or maybe that was just me? … in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Must-See Musicals by Richard Barrios. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! Actor Kyle Bornheimer was on Mr. Media recently and told me a story about his fifth or sixth birthday party. He thought it would be great fun to invite all of his buddies over to watch his favorite movie with him. He wanted them to share the joy it gave him. So far, so good. Except the movie was Singing in the Rain. Not exactly conducive for that age group to sit still for two hours. But four decades later, the classic musical is still Bornheimer’s favorite film of all time. RICHARD BARRIOS podcast excerpt: "A transcendent musical for me would be 'Love Me Tonight,' from 1932, with Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, music by Rogers & Hart. It's a stunning, wonderful film. I would use this movie as a test for friends or possible people to date. I would show them this movie and if they didn't get it, I didn't want to date them." For me, I’m a fan of the more rare modern musicals – Grease, Saturday Night Fever, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and White Nights to name a few. My favorite in the genre would probably be my first: Mary Poppins. It is as charming today as it was the first time I saw it with my grandfather – and the Rockettes – at Radio City Music Hall. Joining me today is Richard Barrios, a guy who knows a thing or two about the intersection of film and music. His latest book is Must-See Musicals: 50 Show-Stopping Movies We Can’t Forget.
