Our guest today is Spiked Online's chief political writer, Brendan O’Neill. Brendan is one of the English-speaking world’s foremost political commentators. He came to fore as the excruciating drama of Britain’s departure from the European Union edged on (and on). I first spoke to Brendan leading up to the 2016 referendum when I was talkRADIO’s evening show host. I’ve watched him ever since, battling away for the 17.4m who voted Leave. In a Jewish and Israel podcast, I frame our discussion around the hard-left and its changing attitude to national self-determination, Israel and the anti-Zionist antisemitism which has followed. We also draw the obvious parallels between Brexit and Israel the nation state and discuss the woke left’s cancellation of Julie Burchill, also an outspoken supporter of Israel and the Jewish people. There’s football’s “taking the knee”, being Irish in the UK. buying your council house and civil liberties in the era of Covid. “I didn’t desert the left, the left deserted me!”, explains Spiked’s former editor, now concentrating his efforts on a prolific body of writing. Our democracies are the stronger for it too. I can’t thank Brendan enough for this captivating and hugely popular episode. 🎧LISTEN NOW to Brendan O’Neill.
