The story you’re about to hear is true, even if it sounds implausible even for fiction. It’s about a little girl named Danielle, described in Lane DeGregory’s story in the St. Petersburg Times that won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. I remember the day that Lane’s story first appeared in the paper. My wife, who is an editor in the Times newsfeatures department, came home that night talking about the crazy traffic at the newspaper’s website, all drawn to the incredible tale of the feral child. Within days, there were 1,284 comments posted to the paper’s website about just this story. I can tell you that Lane DeGregory is one of the most admired reporters at the St. Petersburg Times, a newspaper that has won its shared of Pulitzers over the last quarter century. But she is also one of the best-liked journalists at the paper. Lane DeGregory • • •
